SUSPENDED: CSUN VITA Clinic Offers Free Tax Prep Help

Free Tax Prep Help

Due to COVID-19, the CSUN VITA Clinic is suspending free tax preparation services and may reopen the clinic service to the public in April, depending on the circumstances.  Please visit the CSUN VITA Clinic page for latest updates.

Tax season is under way, and so is help with tax preparation.  Don’t struggle alone.  If you earn no more than $56,000 a year, CSUN VITA Clinic may provide free help.

“We are excited to launch our 50th year of providing free tax preparation to residents of the San Fernando Valley and beyond,” said Rafi Efrat, the Bookstein Chair in Taxation and director of CSUN’s VITA Clinic. “Our goal is to make an impact in the community by offering low-income taxpayers access to the federal and California Earned Income Tax Credit, as well as other tax credits and deductions,” said Efrat, a professor of accountancy and director of the Master of Science in Taxation program.   “With the help of our trained and certified graduate and undergraduate student volunteers, we hope to serve as many as 9,000 taxpayers in 17 sites this tax season."

The Bookstein Institute for Higher Education in Taxation in the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics administers the program. Volunteers in Accountancy and Master of Science in Taxation programs prepare the returns, supervised by experienced tax practitioners.

The successful program served more than 8,700 low-income taxpayers in 2019.  Clinic supporters include Bank of Hope, the City and County of Los Angeles, City National Bank , Citi Community Development , CSUN Associated Students, Friends of the Family, Family Source, Harvey and Harriet Bookstein, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, New Economics for Women and Wells Fargo.

In 2019 the IRS processed more than 155 million individual tax returns.  Taxpayers and preparers visited the IRS website more than 652 million times in 2019. Don’t feel overwhelmed.  Make an appointment with VITA either online, or by email at, or by calling (818) 677-3600.  VITA offers the service at CSUN and at local public libraries.  Good luck!
