The CDS Distance Learning Master's Degree Program is a 3 year, 10 semester program. All academic coursework in this program is offered 100% online. All clinical practicum experiences are completed at sites within the student’s community. The clinical practicum experiences require students to be available for a minimum of 12 to16 hours per week during the three pediatric clinical practicum experiences. The adult externship is completed during the last summer of the program, when students are required to be available eight hours per day; five days per week for the 12 weeks of the summer session.
Speech-language pathologists assist both children and adults with a wide range of communication disorders. Excellent career opportunities in this field are expected to continue well into the next decade as the expanding older population ages and medical advances improve survival rates for premature infants and victims of stroke and trauma, all of whom typically require professional speech assessment and, possibly, treatment.
A master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) is the professional entry-level requirement for employment as a speech-language pathologist. Completion of CSUN's Master of Science in Communicative Disorders program satisfies the academic requirements for
- Licensure in all states to practice in medical, rehabilitative or private practice settings;
- Education credentials in all states for employment in public schools; and
- Professional certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the field's leading professional, credentialing and scientific organization in the U.S.
Offered in collaboration with CSUN's College of Health and Human Development, this program is a 41-month course of study, taught fully online by distinguished CSUN faculty with field experience in all aspects of the profession. The program is taught in the cohort format, which maximizes interaction with faculty and fosters the development of networking relationships with fellow participants.
CSUN also offers a two-year, fully online SLP Prerequisite ("Pre-SLP") program that prepares those with bachelor's degrees in fields other than CDS or SLP for automatic admission into the Master of Science in Communicative Disorders program.
CSUN’s Master of Science in Communicative Disorders program recently won the Outstanding Program Award from the National Awards Committee of the University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA).
