President Harrison Signs Climate Action Letter

CSUN President Dianne Harrison, has joined with presidents and chancellors from 234 Colleges and Universities in 35 states, to urge President Trump and congressional representatives to accelerate progress toward a clean-energy future. Through their open letter, composed by a diverse group of higher-education institutions and the Boston-based nonprofit  organization Second Nature, signatories call on elected officials to support participation in the Paris Agreement, climate research, and investment in the low-carbon economy. The schools expressed their alignment with the business and investment communities in supporting the science-based targets outlined in the Paris  Agreement. The letter was sent to the President on January 13. The letter states, “The upcoming transition of federal leadership presents a unique opportunity to address head-on the challenges of climate change by accelerating the new energy economy and creating strong, resilient communities. We are committed to developing and deploying innovative climate solutions that provide a prosperous future for all Americans.”

CSUN has been taking climate action, including voluntarily setting carbon-neutrality goals and publicly reporting progress through the Climate Leadership Commitment.“Climate change poses a very real threat to the future of our planet and human society, and we cannot afford to ignore it or slow down the great progress we have already made,” said President Harrison who signed the letter on behalf of the University. She also said, “CSUN and many other universities have already come a long way in showing how being more sustainable can be done responsibly and efficiently. These efforts also further advance our mission to educate students to be responsible citizens and good stewards of the environment and their communities. We are proud of CSUN’s leadership and progress on this front, and I hope the new administration will maintain the momentum.”
