CSUN Students
Registration

To qualify as a CSUN student for summer enrollment purposes, you must be formally admitted to and enrolled in a CSUN degree program, credit certificate, or credential program. See more student statuses.

Student Statuses

Incoming Freshman

You are not eligible for Summer Session courses prior to your first semester at CSUN, but you may be required to complete Early Start. Please review the First-Time Freshman Advising Checklist to ensure that you satisfy the testing and advisement requirements before beginning your freshman year.

Incoming Transfer Student

You are eligible for Summer Session courses prior to your first semester. We recommend that you speak with your academic advisor and review your Degree Progress Report before enrolling. Consult the First-Time Transfer Checklist for information on academic advising and degree planning tools.

More than 130 academic units

If you have earned more than 130 academic units and have not yet applied for graduation, you will have a registration hold that will not allow you to register for any term. Students with such a hold on their record must contact the associate dean in the academic college of their major.

Recent Graduate

If you have recently graduated or will graduate in Spring 2022, you must enroll in Summer Session 2022 as a Visiting Student.

Academically Disqualified

Students in disqualified status must enroll as a Visiting Student. Disqualified students may use Summer Session grades at CSUN or elsewhere to meet academic requirements and possibly apply for readmission. For limits on degree-applicable credits, see: Applying Credit to a CSUN Degree.

CSU Student

If you are a CSU-system student, you must enroll as a Visiting Student.

Enrollment Requirements

Maximum Unit Load:

  • Undergraduate Students13 units
  • Graduate Students13 units

To request approval to enroll in more than 13 units in summer term (all sessions combined), students in good standing may do so by completing the Extra Unit Authorization form for Summer 2022. The link to the form will be available closer to the start of registration.

However, this form is strictly limited at this time, and will only be processed when Nonrestrictive Registration begins (see Registration Calendar).

Repeating Courses

Students may enroll in a repeated course on a space-available basis, beginning on May 31, 2022. See the CSUN Admissions & Records website for more information.

Students currently registered in a CSUN course in Spring 2022 cannot register to repeat that course during Summer Session until Spring 2022 grades are posted. If Spring 2022 grades are not posted in time for registration for S1 and S2, you must wait until S3 to repeat the course.

Third Repeat: Enrolling in an individual course for the third time is generally not permitted. For exceptions, consult your academic advisor and complete the Third Repeat Approval Request (PDF).

Financial Aid & Scholarships and Enrollment Protection for Summer Session

CSUN students currently admitted to and enrolled in a degree program, credit certificate, or credential program may be eligible for Financial Aid & Scholarships for Summer Session. Approved enrollment protection can also prevent students from automatic disenrollment from all classes for non-payment.

For details on Financial Aid & Scholarships and how to apply for Enrollment Protection for Summer Session, please visit Financial Aid & Scholarships.
