Academic Policies

Academic questions, such as the fit of specific courses into degree-program requirements, should be referred to the relevant academic advisor.

Courses taken and completed in the Open University Program can apply towards a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, credential, or graduate certificate program (see Special Note below). However, there are limits to the number of academic credit units students can transfer.

Applying Credit to a Bachelor's Degree:

Nonmatriculated students are eligible to apply up to 24 units of academic credit towards a bachelor's degree at CSUN.

Applying Credit to a Master's Degree, Credential or Graduate Credit Certificate Program:

Nonmatriculated students are eligible to apply up to 9 units of academic credit towards a master's degree, credential, or graduate credit certificate program.

Special Note: In all cases, the department chair responsible for the program will determine which, if any, courses taken as a non-matriculated student can and should apply to a particular degree/credential/certificate program.

CSUN does not discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or veteran status, as monitored by the Department of Labor (Office of Federal Contract Compliance) and the Department of Education, or in violation of section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the regulations adopted thereunder.

Students requiring accommodations for classes should contact either CSUN Disability Resources and Educational Services or the National Center on Deafness (for those who are deaf or hard of hearing) for assistance.

Please note: Students who are eligible for accommodations and do not make arrangements for needed services prior to the start of the course(s) they are taking cannot later use the lack of services or a previously undisclosed disability as an excuse for poor academic performance or withdrawal from a course.

Final examinations are usually held on the last class meeting. Confirm final exam time and location with your instructor in advance. Some courses do not have a final exam.

Any student who finds it impossible to take a final examination on the date scheduled must make arrangements in advance with the instructor either to take the examination at another time prior to the deadline for reporting grades, or request that a grade of Incomplete be assigned and then follow the regulations concerning the removal of the Incomplete.

For more information, see Final Exams.

Grades become part of a student’s academic record and are included in the student’s overall grade point average at CSUN.

CSUN Portal

You can view and manage your academic, financial and personal information using the CSUN Portal. To view your grades, log into the MyCSUN portal and click on the “Check Grades” button in the Quick Links box.

Please note: Students with a grade of Incomplete in any course cannot register to repeat that course. A student must make appropriate arrangements with the instructor concerning the correction or removal of the Incomplete grade.

Courses are part of the student’s academic record. Students may order an official transcript from the CSUN Office of the Registrar online, by mail or in-person.

More information about obtaining transcripts can be found at the Order Transcripts page.
