The Early Retention Alert System (ERA) is an automated resource designed to provide notifications to support staff when the system interprets that a student account exhibit signs that a student may potentially benefit from support. The system uses general engagement metrics to make such determinations.
It is important to understand that receiving an ERA notification from a support staff member does NOT necessarily mean that you have any academic issues, are in trouble, or have done anything wrong; moreover, the system provides support staff with an opportunity to reach out to students and ask them if they are in need of assistance, providing them with an understanding of available resources for such if they confirm that they are in need of any support.
As an automated resource, there are instances in which the system throws up a false positive by nudging a support staff member to reach out to a student who is doing fine and is not in need of any assistance. In such cases, the worst that will happen is that the staff member will ask if you are in need of any assistance, and you will answer "No, I'm good, thank you." As support staff's function is to provide a continuum of care for students throughout their journey within the program, they may regularly check in with you anyway, ERA-related or not-because it's their job. Talking with you is always a bonus for them!
If you don't wish to receive ERA-related communications (which we would advise against; but you do have that option), please login to CSUN Portal > Click the 'ACADEMICS' tab > Click 'View or edit your profile now' link in myCSUN profile pagelet > Click 'Self-Serv Subscribe / Un-subscribe Maintenance' link > Select 'No' on function code "ERA" "Receive ERA-related communications". However, please be advised that this may limit the level of support that you may receive; the ERA system is designed to help support staff to help you.
Please be advised that not responding to communications from support staff (whether about ERA or any topic) may result in a hold being placed on your account—something which may ultimately affect your enrollment. This is designed to ensure that students who may have disengaged with the program for whatever reason without correctly communicating such to support staff are not enrolled in future semesters and, thus, incur additional tuition fees for which they will be held accountable (i.e. the hold is designed to help you).
If you have any questions about the ERA system, the support offered by The Tseng College, or anything else, please contact your assigned Tseng College Program Management team member—they would be happy to assist you.
