(Jan. 6, 2015) - Business people, academicians and anyone wanting to learn about funding research are invited to a presentation Jan. 15 on campus, "How to Win Federal Research Grants." LACI@CSUN, a business development advising center recently established on campus, hosts the event in collaboration with CSUN's Office of Research and Graduate Studies

The U.S. Small Business Administration sponsors research grants for small businesses engaged in scientific research and development. The programs -- Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer -- exist in numerous federal departments, including Health and Human Services, Defense, the Environmental Protection Agency, Education, Energy and the National Science Foundation.

Grants drive economic growth by financing innovative developments by business, technology and manufacturing sectors. They encourage research and development. "Central to the program is expansion of the public/private sector partnership to include joint venture opportunities for small business and the nation's premier nonprofit research institutions," according to information provided by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes, "These programs allow U.S.-owned and operated small businesses to engage in federal research and development that has a strong potential for commercialization."

Event speaker Marie Talnack, Ph.D., specializes in technology transfer to create new business opportunities and economic growth, and will explain how these programs work.

The Tseng College collaborates with the university to support LACI@CSUN's efforts to collaborate with local businesses and organizations to encourage research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

There is no charge to attend the event, but visitor parking on campus costs $6.
