Open University Registration Instructions

Three Easy Steps for Open University Registration

  1. Select the course (s) you wish to take from the CSUN Schedule of Classes.
  2. At the first class meeting, request a permission number* from the instructor, to add the class. A permission number is required to enroll.
    Bring proof of completion of the prerequisites** to the first class meeting. An unofficial transcript will serve this purpose. It is important that you meet the academic prerequisites for the course of your choice.
  3. Register online or in person.

In person:
  • Complete the paper registration form for in-person submission.
  • Visit The Tseng College Registration Office located in the Matador Bookstore Complex, Room 100.
  • Bring a valid picture I.D. (required for all in-person transactions).
  • Bring your permission number when you register in person.

Please Note: The campus is closed for holiday observances (no instruction; all offices closed) on the following dates:

Monday, September 7, 2009 - Labor Day;
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - Veterans Day;
Thursday, November 26 - Friday, November 27, 2009 - Thanksgiving Holiday; December 25, 2009 - January 1, 2010 - Winter recess;
Monday, January 18, 2010 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day;
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - Cesar Chavez Day;
April 5-10 - spring recess;
Monday, May 31 - Memorial Day.


Forms of Payment:

  • Visa or Master Card can be used for payment: online, in person or by mail.
  • Checks or Money orders: made out in exact amount to California State University, Northridge.
  • Electronic Checks: are a payment option online.
  • Cash payments: in the exact amount, are accepted, on behalf of The Tseng College, at Cash Services in Bayramian Hall, ground floor.

*Permission Numbers

What Are Permission Numbers and What Are They Used For?
Permission numbers replace written approval from instructors for students wishing to add a class beginning the first day of instruction. To add a class on-line or in-person through Open University, you must obtain a permission number from the instructor or department.

Can I Reuse a Permission Number?
As of the Fall 2007 semester, permission numbers can be reused by students until the enrollment for their class is completed.

How Long Is A Permission Number Valid?
All unused permission numbers become inactive on Friday of the second week of the semester.


**Prerequisite Policy

Courses with prerequisites are listed as such in the current university catalog. It is important that you meet the academic prerequisites for the course of your choice. If you enroll without the required background, you may be disenrolled at the instructor's or department chair's request.
