Just Opened: New, Improved Computer Lab
The Tseng College now has its very own,  very spacious computer lab, located in the Matador Bookstore Complex. (Previously, our computer and digital media and design classes were taught in other campus buildings.) The new lab, in BK 104, is equipped with 25 Gateway Profile MX5 computers, which feature wireless networking technology and use the fastest Pentium 4 processors available. Each computer has a built-in monitor with an 18” LCD screen. Student evaluations from last weekend's grand opening: "Nice lab!" "Fast new computers!"

As for lab décor, the walls will be brightened – temporarily, at least – by the original artwork of your Insider editor. So, come by and try our new lab.  Introduction to Macromedia Flash starts this Saturday, Sept. 18.

New! Professional Presentation Skills: Speak Like a Pro
A dynamic, five-week course in professional presentation skills starts on Sept. 21. According to Carla Bryant, senior program development director for the The Tseng College’s Learning Partnerships Group, this course was developed because trends in business require more people within an organization to be able to present information. “This is part of the transition of our economy from industrial to one in which information and knowledge are the key commodities,” Bryant said.

The instructor is John James Santangelo, a professional speaker, author, seminar leader and success coach. You can check out his experience – and read testimonials from many organizations that have used his services (including the U.S. Army, Xerox and WellPoint) – at http://www.johnsantangelo.com/products.html.

Note: This course will count toward satisfaction of the requirement for an Advanced Professional Development certificate in the Fundamentals of Business Management. This certificate program is currently being revised and updated to meet the needs of today’s midcareer professionals. For more information, write carla.bryant@csun.edu or call (818) 677-3922.

New! Spanish for Law Enforcement Personnel
The first Tseng College language course created for law enforcement professionals starts on Thursday evening, Sept. 23. This course was developed in response to queries from local law enforcement agencies who expressed a need for more bilingual peace officers in the region. “This course is the foundation for a series of offerings that we are developing for the law enforcement community,” said Daniele Dibie, senior program development director for language and cultural studies at The Tseng College. Robert Reyes, instructor for the first course, is an experienced interpreter and security consultant whose background includes 28 years in human resources management with the Los Angeles Police Department. In addition to a B.S. in criminal justice, Reyes holds California adult teaching credentials in criminal justice and health and safety and various California OSHA certifications in environmental health and safety. He also has acted as a consultant for employee “critical incident” management and workplace violence prevention.

Sonoma County Wine Trip
This fall, The Tseng College ventures to Sonoma County, which has more recognized viticultural areas (“appellations”) than any other California county. The tour will visit two of the largest and best-known – Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley – and feature the Geyser Peak (www.geyserpeakwinery.com); Ferrari-Carano (www.ferrari-carano.com); Jordan (www.jordanwinery.com); and Alexander Valley Vineyards (www.avvwine.com) wineries. The tour includes lunch in picturesque Healdsburg, transportation to the wineries and all tasting fees. Call Barb Frye at (818) 677-6404 or email barb.frye@csun.edu for more information or to register.

Gourmet Cooking & Wine-Tasting Symposium
One of the most popular of all Tseng College offerings, the Gourmet Cooking & Wine Tasting Symposium celebrates its 18th year at Noé at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles at noon, Sunday, Nov. 21. Chef Robert Gadsby's cuisine has been described as "Progressive American with Japanese aesthetics." Learn what this means by visiting his kitchen as he prepares special dishes just for this group. The menu is planned to showcase the award-winning wines of Tobin James Cellars in Paso Robles, which will be presented by winery co-owner "Toby" James. For a full description, click here. These events always fill quickly, so make your reservation early.
