Online Payment Option Restored
If you registered for a 2004 Summer Term course online at the opening of the registration period, you probably encountered a notice on the Schedule of Classes informing you that our computer system was temporarily unable to accept online payments. This capability has since been restored. If you registered online and have not already paid your course fee in person or by mail, we encourage you to pay online now as it is the policy of The Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning that payment is due upon registration for all classes.   Top

Is Medical Interpreting for You?

Find out at our FREE orientation and testing event on Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m.-12 noon, on the CSUN campus! If you are bilingual (Spanish and English) and looking for a rewarding career where the demand for interpreters is great, you can have your skills evaluated and get answers to your questions about working as a medical interpreter from professionals in the field. Guest speakers will include Audrey Simons, community health education coordinator for Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City , and Beverly Treuman, president of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) and interpreter for UCLA Medical Center.

While this presentation will be The Tseng College’s first to include healthcare industry representatives, it also will feature working professionals from the world of legal interpreting, where the starting salary for state-certified court interpreters in California is $265 per day. Our low-tuition Interpreting and Translating certificate program will prepare you to take and pass the state’s certification exams for the legal and medical professions. The demand for qualified interpreters in both fields is high.

NOTE: While the event is free, registration is required. For information, call (800) 328-9900 or (818) 677-4769 or go to http://www.csun.edu/exl/program/language/index.htm.   Top

What to Do before Your Class?

We know that most of our students come straight from work, but if you can arrive early – or attend class on Saturday  – here are some ideas for getting more enjoyment out of your time on campus this summer.

  • View The Tseng Collection of Chinese antiquities in the C.K. and Teresa Tseng Gallery in the Oviatt Library. The exhibit, “Possessing the Past: Mysteries of Ancient Chinese Art,” runs through August 27, spans 6,000 years of history, and includes stunning jade and bronze  pieces as well as assortment of ancient pottery and tools dating back to the Stone Age. The exhibit is open during regular library hours  – except that closing time for the library’s upper floors is 15 minutes earlier than for the main floor.
  • Take a swim. Although the University Student Union is being remodeled, the Fitness Centre’s Olympic-size pool is open for leisure and lap swimming. One-day pool passes for students of The Tseng College cost $3. Pool hours are 7 a.m.-6:45 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m., Saturday. For more information, call the Fitness Centre at (818) 677-3604.
  • Check out the classic movie posters displayed along the main corridor in Manzanita Hall
  • Grab an espresso or linger over a latte at the Freudian Sip coffeehouse in the Sierra Center. Coffeehouse hours are 7 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The adjacent Marketplace complex with its three food service operations  – Bamboo Terrace, Checkers Deli and Pizzazz – is open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday. Top
