Introducing “Spring Special Session”

In June, CSUN will launch a new self-supporting session that will start when
Spring Term classes end. Spring Special Session has been created to offer an additional scheduling option for University students who wish to spread their course loads out over the year.  

This year’s Spring Special Session begins June 1. Information on Spring Special Session courses is now available online. Click here for schedule.

The following travel study and language study abroad courses will be offered during Spring Special Session 2004.
 
War and Remembrance

Pre-trip meeting: June 5, 9 a.m. -12 noon

Trip dates: June 14-30  

Join CSUN History Department lecturer Stephen A. Bourque, Ph.D., on this journey of remembrance to the principal battlegrounds of World War I (1914-1918) in Belgium and northern France. Dr. Bourque, a 2001 recipient of the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award, is a retired U.S. Army armored cavalry officer, who has taught a variety of military history courses.  

Fee: $465, credit and noncredit, plus $250 administration fee and travel costs of approximately $2,500

Travel Study to Greece and Italy

This travel study program, offered in collaboration with the CSUN History Department, is in two parts.  

Part I – Greece and Rome

Trip dates: July 15-30 

Join Robert L. Cleve, Ph.D., CSUN History Department lecturer and specialist in ancient Greek and Roman history, on a tour of Western Civilization’s best-known archaeological sites. Participants will visit Athens and enjoy a four-day cruise to sites on the islands of Mykonos, Santorini, Patmos, Crete and Rhodes, as well as four nights and five days in Rome. Three courses (each earning three lecture units – special session credit) are offered on this trip: Themes in Western Civilization before 1500 (HIST 303, Term & Class: 2046-10006 or 2044-10007); The Ancient Greek World (HIST 410, Term & Class 2044-10008); and The Roman World (HIST 411, Term & Class 2044-10009).   

Fee: $465 per course, plus $1,875 travel costs, not including airfare

Part II – Rome and Florence

Trip dates: July 25-Aug. 5  

Join John Accomando, Ph.D., for an in-depth look at Roman and other Italian civilizations. All accommodations, transfers, meals, and museum and site visits are provided. Dr. Accomando, who has taught university-level Italian and history courses and led travel study tours for many years, will be teaching “Renaissance and Reformation” (HIST 444, 2044-10010). You can sign up for University credit or audit the program.  

Fee: $465, plus $1,875 travel costs, not including airfare

A Roman Adventure in Language and Culture

Pre-trip meeting: June 1, 6-8 p.m.

Program dates: July 2-30  

Offered by the CSUN Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures in collaboration with the College of Extended Learning, this program provides opportunities to study Italian language and culture in Italy. The program accommodates all levels of students studying Italian and includes visits to major museums and historic sites, group outings to cultural events, and travel excursions.  

“Learn Italian in Italy ”(XLNG 984, Term & Class: 2045-10022) is the only noncredit course in this program. The fee is $465, plus travel costs of approximately $2,600 and airfare.  

The following University for-credit courses also are offered at $155 per lecture unit, plus approximately $2,600 in travel costs* and airfare:  

  • Elementary Italian I (ITAL 101, Term & Class: 2044-1004; 3 lecture units)  

  • Elementary Italian Conversation (ITAL 101C, Term & Class: 2044-1005, 3 lecture units) NOTE: ITAL 101C must be taken concurrently with ITAL 101.

  • Intermediate Italian I (ITAL 201, Term & Class: 2044-1006, 3 lecture units)  

  • Advanced Conversational Italian (ITAL 300, Term & Class: 2044-1013, 3 lecture units)  

  • Modern Italian Culture (FLIT 371, Term & Class: 2044-1007, 3 lecture units)  

  • Independent Study (ITAL 499A, Term & Class: 2044-1008, 1 lecture unit)  

  • Independent Study (ITAL 499B, Term & Class: 2044-1009, 2 lecture units)  

  • Independent Study (ITAL 499C, Term & Class: 2044-1010, 3 lecture units)  

* Travel costs include hotel accommodations and three meals daily while in Rome as well as accommodations and some meals during excursions. Academic Internships and Field Training

For University students who are majoring in Environmental and Occupational Health, Spring Special Session 2004 offers academic internships and supervised field training. For information, contact the EOH department at (818) 677-7476. Senior-level students in the Leisure Studies and Recreation degree program also have supervised internship opportunities during Spring Special Session. Contact the LSRC department at (818) 677-3202 for details.
