Extended Learning Gets New Name

In January, the CSU Board of Trustees approved the renaming of ExL. We are now The Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning. Dean Joyce Feucht-Haviar pointed out that the new name is “a very cool thing” because it makes us the only continuing education/extended learning unit in California – and one of the very few in the nation – to have a distinctive name. (Think “Anderson School” at UCLA or the “Michael D. Eisner College of Education” at CSUN.)

The official renaming is scheduled for April 21 at 5 p.m. The event will include a dedication ceremony and reception in connection with the designation of the Tseng Wing of the Oviatt Library and the opening of an exhibition featuring Chinese antiquities that the Tseng family is donating to CSUN, together with some additional works on loan for the occasion. The total pledge of Chinese antiquities, made by Chinese-American  entrepreneur Roland Tseng, is valued at $38 million – and is the largest gift ever made to CSUN or any Cal State University campus.

Would You Like to Earn $265 a Day?

This is the starting salary for court interpreters certified by the State of California. Since there is a shortage of trained and certified interpreters, the job market in this exciting field is wide open. The medical profession also has a growing need for skilled interpreters.

A low-tuition program offered by The Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning will prepare you to take and pass California certification exams for both the legal and medical professions. Separate classes in Spanish and ESL are available to hone your skills.

Fluency in English and Spanish is required. (Note: Interpreting is proving to be a great “second career” choice for people in rehabilitation. The program is recommended by the California Association of Rehabilitation and Reemployment Professionals.)

Classes start February 23. Attend our FREE orientation and testing event on the CSUN campus at 9 a.m., Saturday, February 14. Get your bilingual skills evaluated and your questions answered.

Coming March 27: Santa Barbara Wine Country Tour

This spring we will make the most of our day-long “Exploring California’s Vineyards” adventure by tasting the wines of four leading Santa Barbara County vintners while traveling to only three venues. First stop: Santa Barbara Winery, where we visit with president and winemaker Bruce McGuire. Second stop: lunch in Santa Barbara , for which wines will be provided by winemaker Kathy Joseph of Fiddlehead Cellars. Last stop: Zaca Mesa Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley, where we will enjoy the wines of both Clay Brock, Zaca Mesa Winery, and Chuck Ortman of Ortman Family Vineyards.
