The printed "Summer 2006 Schedule of Offerings for Visiting Summer Students" will be available on campus on March 20. This schedule contains listings for both academic credit courses and Extended Learning (ExL) classes. The complete schedule has been available online since Feb. 27.
There are three separate summer sessions: June 5-Aug. 25; June 5-July 14; and July 17-Aug. 25. Students not regularly enrolled at CSUN must register through ExL's Visiting Summer Students program. Students may make an appointment to register for credit classes starting March 21. A registration appointment is not required for ExL summer classes. Students may register for most ExL classes anytime until the first day of class.
Industry leaders will discuss how knowledge management practices affect organizations in the 21st century at "The Southern California Knowledge Management Forum and Breakfast" to be held on campus from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 17. Designed to acquaint anyone who is interested with the growing field of knowledge management, this FREE event is hosted by ExL. While there is no charge for attending, registration is required. The increase in bilingual religious services being held to serve the community's rapidly growing non-English-speaking populations is creating a new area of specialization in the field of interpreting. On Sat., March 18, ExL will offer its first career-exploration workshop in Interpreting for Religious Services. A second workshop will be offered on Aug. 19. You are invited to attend a "meet the authors" fundraising event co-sponsored by ExL and the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley. The speakers are UCLA basketball coach and "master teacher" John Wooden and Swen Nater, one of Wooden's former players and co-author of You Haven't Taught Until They Have Learned – John Wooden's Teaching Principles and Practices. The book provides insight on Wooden's coaching career and what he learned from others in the classroom to perfect principles for success on and off the court. Funds raised will purchase copies of the book for local K-12 public school principals.
The event will be held on Sat., March 25, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Valley Inn Restaurant, 4577 Sherman Oaks Ave., Sherman Oaks [map]. Included in the $60 donation is a buffet lunch and a signed copy of the book. Reservations are required. Friday, March 31, is a state holiday created to honor the life and work of Latino labor leader Cesar Chavez. The campus will be closed and no classes will be held.
This year, spring break is the week of April 10-15. No classes will be held, but the campus will be open.
The California Hotel and Lodging Association recently named Susie Becken, a student in ExL's Human Resources Management certificate program, "Outstanding Lodging Employee of the Year." Becken is executive assistant to the general manager of the Hilton Burbank Airport and Convention Center and expects to complete her certificate in 2007.
On April 22, ExL will be returning to Paso Robles and the Edna Valley for the annual spring Exploring California's Vineyards tour. CSUN's new bachelor's degree-completion program in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Management for working adults starts at Glendale College on Aug. 30. This is a 52-unit program that has been specially designed to be convenient and easily accessible for working professionals. It takes only two years to complete. Presentations for prospective students will be held at Glendale College [map] on May 9 and June 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. The university's Business Administration academic advisor and ExL's program director will be on hand to answer questions and provide assistance with the application process.
